After spending a lovely Christmas in Seattle
and sipping a New Years Champers in New Jersey
with our boys, we struck off south for Florida .
I95 is the interstate of choice here,. Soon we crossed the Delaware ,
then the Chesapeake ,
where we stopped for coffee. A “small”
coffee here is a tubful. Sloshing
slightly, we pressed on. Next up was the
Baltimore Harbour tunnel, then the Washington DC
Beltway, to skirt the worst bits of traffic in the Capitol.
Then Virginia and the
cradle of the Civil War; names like Potomac, Manassas ,
Fredericksberg, The Wilderness, Richmond ,
Petersberg and on into North Carolina and Raleigh for the night.
A good day’s driving, in spite of the 15-mile-long
stop-and-go traffic jam before Richmond . Happily, Reg discovered the Express Lanes
which are only available to holders of the EZPass (ie: they’re toll roads
without tollbooths, but with lots of cameras so they can mail you fines if
you’re not equipped.) Since we are so equipped,
we swooped past the first few miles of the jam, but alas, the Express Lanes
ended before the jam did.
Interminability notwithstanding, we really only lost 15 minutes to the
Slow Creep.
My one enduring memory of the Washington beltway and area was the horrendous traffic..... absolutely ridiculous! And that was 10 years ago - I guess it hasn't improved at all
